Charles and Lucy (later Stella) Helmer were opened in Subud in 1963 and 1965, and another local resident, Shirley Pumpelly, had also been opened.  But there was no Subud group in Woodstock until 1967, when David Hanni heard about Subud from Stella Helmer, and he and some of his friends went to talk to Maynard and Lilliana MacDonald, Subud Helpers, who were living and teaching at the Mountain School in Vershire, Vermont.  Everyone was impressed with the MacDonalds' explanations of Bapak’s receiving and the latihan – which could be passed along to others – no rules (other than separate latihans for men and women), no catechism, no prerequisites, no obligations, and each Subud member might receive their own individual proof that what they were practicing was worthwhile and powerful guidance.  Most of them asked to be opened, and after a three month probation period, they - along with the Helmers and MacDonalds - became the founding members of Subud Woodstock.

Jonathan Conner, Bruce (now Daniel) Foster, Charles Jr (now George) Helmer, David Hanni, Wolcott Pugh, Jane Robinson, David (later Machmud, deceased) Rowe, John (now Lucas) Rowe, Phyllis Rowe, Eric von Ammon

Over the years, more people joined the group, and in 1973, Subud Woodstock, Inc. was incorporated.  In 1973 and 1974 they built the Subud House.
